5 Unique places in Victoria to view the perseid meteor shower this weekend

Every year, the Perseid meteor showers light up the sky between late July and late August and hit their peak performance in mid-August.

Well, we’re approaching mid-August and meteor-watchers can expect an impressive show between Saturday, August 12th at 11 p.m. and August 13th at 4 a.m.

To prepare you for this magical event, we’ve put together a quick list of places to cozy in and view the sky!

Some will be in the city of Victoria, whereas others will be a little further away from the light pollution — the key to witnessing amazing phenomena like this.

Similarly, you can check out our list of places for viewing the supermoon, which will have some great additional places for astronomical occurrences.

Without further delay, here are 5 places in and around Victoria to watch the Perseid meteor shower on August 12th and 13th:

Christmas Hill

This 1.8 kilometre trail is described as easy, making it perfect for those wanting to get a mini walk in before settling at the top for the light show.

It’s well marked and the trail mainly consists of stone steps!

As described, once you reach the top, you are given an unobstructed 360 degree view of the city and surrounding areas as far as the Olympic mountains to the west.

Something to note though, in case you were hoping to bring your furry pals along — it’s a nature sanctuary, so there aren’t any dogs allowed.

Pickles’ Bluff Loop

This loop is considered to be a moderately challenging route — so be prepared to sweat if you’re hoping to trek to Pickles’ Bluff.

The view is absolutely worth the minor struggle and you’ll get to overlook the straits and the southern end of Vancouver Island.

There’s also a swing! What more could you want?

Ogden Point

This is a popular walking spot near downtown Victoria and can be accessed by bus, bike, walking or driving!

Visitors can choose a variety of spots along the edge by the water whether it’s a beach access or the concrete steps along the edge of the Breakwater path (these can get slippery, so use at your own risk).

The water traffic and city lights may slightly interfere with your eyes abilities to adjust to the dark, but it’s still a lovely place to stargaze within the city.

If you’re hoping to be further secluded from the lights, further down Dallas Road towards Cook Street and beyond have plenty of beach nooks.

Island View Beach

This wonderful and expansive beach is a mix of sand and small rocks with plenty of driftwood to lounge on.

It’s about a 20 minute drive out of Victoria but it’s worth it for the sea air and escape from city life.

Bring a blanket or two, friends, and some snacks to curate a quick and epic adventure.

Shawnigan Lake

If you’re up for a bit of a drive, this summer hot-spot is located around 40 minutes out of Victoria and away from the bright lights of the city and into nature.

The lake is 7 kilometres long and has plenty of textural beauty in the landscape — between the rolling hills, distant mountains, and variety of plant species, there’s plenty to look at.

This whole area contains several popular hiking spots and is home to a village with galleries, shops, and food places!

To get the most out of this mini adventure, go for sunset and bring a picnic!
